From the author of 'Gulf-Diary of the Microchip War', this concise history, also re-edited by the original author of the 1991 paperback, whilst not intended as a biography, covers the rise of Mikhail Gorbachev through the ranks of the Communist Party but primarily covers events during the 1991 August coup that shook the world, and the follow on effects this had on the USSR which eventually led to his resignation as Soviet president on 25 December 1991.
.
The title reference ‘fall of a hero’ refers in essence to the change of opinion within Soviet society of the man who initiated Perestroika.

An excellent presentation of a truly brave man who rose above the evil of those around him. His refreshing pragmatism brought changes in a corrupt system in which change seemed impossible. I believe credit should go to his God-fearing praying mother. Gorbachev himself at one time said he was an atheist, but I think he may be reconsidering his belief. Perhaps by now he is a true believer, after searching for the facts about Jesus. May be the next book will include an update on his faith. Anyway I highly recommend this book.Product details

Gorbachev The Rise and Fall of a Hero eBook I D Oppenhiem Ian Davies Reviews
Though this isn't my usual kind of read, I was really impressed how the authors dealt with this difficult subject. We read so much based on personal opinions and theories, but here you will find a book that is straight to the point and doesn't deviate from the importance of this world changing event. Anyone with an interest in the subject will find this a fascinating and historically correct read. Impressive work, well written. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.
Being from a Soviet background I remember these times vividly and have to say that in reading this book many memories were brought to mind. I found I was recalling these events and found this a very accurate and absorbing read. The reference to the "shared sense of humor" between the two leaders General Secretary Gorbachev and U.S President Reagan did allow me a smile but I will not give that story away here. It was enlightening and I would recommend it for its conciseness and accuracy.
Could be the most worthless book on a major historical figure I've read to date. What a waste of paper. Wikipedia has more information about Gorbachev than this book which should be more honestly called a leaflet because of its meager size. Buy works from Robert Service or Vladislav Zubok instead and you'll get a better understanding of Gorbachev.
